PostHeaderIcon Main Attractions in Temple of Heaven

Main Attractions in Temple of HeavenDwelling dedicated to Heaven, Temple of Heaven has been built in a curious and rare combination of architectural styles and technology from Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1912) dynasties. Temple of Heaven is then divided by two enclosed walls separating the inner part from the outer part. The Temple of Heaven is made of a lot of beautiful buildings. The following ones are the most famous and major attractions.

The Altar (Hall) of Prayer for Good Harvests: This wooden building of 38 meters in height and 30 meters in diameter sits on a round foundation and three level white marble stone. It boasts as the most symbolical attraction in Temple of Heaven. The Hall is the most recognizable building with its cone-shaped blue roof crowned with a gilded knob–a real marvel for the eyes. The one that can be seen today is unfortunately not the original for it was burned by a fire in Temple of Heaven, but it takes all the exact shapes, colors and posts of the original one. Indeed, there are inside the hall 28 huge posts which were used to indicate time. The black, yellow and green colors of the inner roof are like everything in the altar, representing the Earth and the Heaven.

This other magnificent building in Temple of Heaven is a single-gabled circular building built on a white marble stone base: the Imperial Vault of Heaven. The building is smaller in size but is as interesting as its neighbor for it was where various memorial tablets of God were placed. Indeed, the Imperial Vault of Heaven is made of bricks and timber and surrounded by the Echo Wall, a smooth circular wall that has the specificity to transmit sounds over large distance, from one tip of the wall to another. The best way to appreciate this building in Temple of Heaven is to look at it from far away so that the vault will reveal its blue umbrella.

Within Temple of Heaven, the Circular Mound Altar is an empty circular platform of three layered terraces with white marble. In Temple of Heaven, the altar is charmingly decorated by lavishly carved dragons and is composed of elements like balusters and many more all disposed according to the traditional Chinese symbolism. The center of the altar is where emperors used to stand when praying for good weather: being circular the altar can also transmit sounds. It is the second spot in Temple of Heaven which has this specificity.

An Imperial Place of Worship to HeavenTemple of Heaven is one of the major symbols of Beijing, famous for its large-scale and spectacular architecture. It attracts millions of tourists every year.

The Temple is a complex of Taoist buildings. Temple of Heaven boasts as the largest ancient sacred place of worship in China. In ancient times, Temple of Heaven was the venue where emperors used to visit every winter to worship Heaven. It features a series of unique elements highlighting emperors’ status on the earth. It used to be solemnly for praying for a good harvest and later deemed as a symbol of the emperor’s reign and stability. The emperors needed a place totally dedicated to Heaven: a way for them to show their respect. Temple of Heaven is the largest complex of Beijing, even much larger than the Forbidden City which used to be the residence of the emperor. It’s said that the emperor, as the son of Heaven, didn’t dare to construct his own dwellings larger than the one of the Heaven. Magnificent, grandiose and colorful, Temple of Heaven is a charming place to visit during a stay in Beijing.

Being a dwelling dedicated to Heaven, Temple of Heaven is a production of different architectural styles and technology from Ming and Qing dynasties. Temple of Heaven covers an area of 2.72 million square meters and is enclosed with a long wall. Different gates located at each cardinal point are main entrances and way out for tourists. Temple of Heaven is divided by two enclosed walls into the inner part and the outer part. It has a large number of amazing buildings among which the most famous are the Altar of Prayer for Good Harvests, the Imperial Vault of Heaven and the Circular Mound Altar.

Like many places in Beijing, Temple of Heaven was designed in line with the ancient Chinese symbolism and mystical cosmological laws. Every detail has been meticulously arranged and decorated in line with the codes and manners to worship the Heaven. In China, number 9 used to be designated as the emperor’s exclusive number. As a result, the Circular Altar was erected with 9 slabs. The interior of the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvest is also dominated by the same kind of law. Every element corresponds to the Earth Solar System. Temple of Heaven is definitely where intense numerology is prevailing more than ever. With that knowledge in mind the visit will be like entering in a world where natural laws govern human’s activity on Earth.

PostHeaderIcon The World-wide Temple of Heaven

The World-wide Temple of HeavenTemple of Heaven came into being as early as the Forbidden City in 1420 under the order of the emperor Zhudi in Ming dynasty. This huge sacrificial temple is situated southeast of the Palace Museum. The northern gardens feature majesty and grandeur compared with the southern ones in China.

According to legends, the designers thought that Temple of Heaven was used to worship Heaven so it’s natural that the residence of Heaven should be larger than the Forbidden City. Therefore, the land coverage of Temple of Heaven is two times larger than the Forbidden City. The main buildings are all covered with dark blue glaze tiles. There used to be a series of sacrificial events held here. There are four gates opened to Temple of Heaven. Its major buildings are concentrated on the sides of the axis line. Entering from the south gate, it’s the Circular Altar of Temple of Heaven. This geometry design building is full of skills and thoughts. The white marbles on the platform, steps and rails are times of nine, which symbolize the Heaven. In Temple of Heaven, The Imperial Vault of Heaven houses a large number of shrines and kind of resembles the Hall of Pray for Good Harvest. The Imperial Vault of Heaven is enclosed by wall, known as the Echo Wall. The interesting Echo Wall enjoys a high prestige among the tourists. If you want to test this wall, you have to do it the right way. Otherwise, you won’t find its charms. To the north of Echo Wall is the Hall of Pray for Good Harvest and Huangqian Hall, the main buildings in the north. They are connected by Danbi Bridge. Within Temple of Heaven, there are also other famous ancient structures, especially the Fast Palace which is kind of different from the other buildings.

In spring, the rivers are covered with purple flowers in blossom. Nowadays, Temple of Heaven has been used as an important cultural activity center. This is because it is the only forest park in Beijing city, for since Ming and Qing dynasties, a large number of pines and cypresses have been planted within Temple of Heaven. The best time to visit Temple of Heaven is during spring and autumn. It’s because during summer days, the grass can’t provide enough shade, therefore, exposure to the sunlight for a long time will cause heatstroke. And the winter is a little bit bleak and cold. However, there is an advantage visiting Temple of Heaven during winter days, which is to better experience the sound effects of the Echo Wall and the like.
